What’s Your Favorite Episode of The Vampire Diaries Season 2?

Season 2 of The Vampire Diaries saw many epic moments: sons, moons, curses, werewolves, vampires, hybrids, Rippers, daggers. Now that the DVD set has come out, we can’t wait to relive them all. Possibly in one sitting. But now that we’re reflecting on the second season of TVD, we want to know which episode was the most memorable, the most astonishing, the most fun, or just your all-around favorite. (Us? We’re still kinda partial to Klaric’s dance moves in Season 2, Episode…

30 Seconds To Mars 'Very Grateful' James Durbin Covered Them On 'Idol'

Frontman Jared Leto says he’s ‘excited to share our song with so many people.’
By James Montgomery

There were all sorts of highlights on Wednesday night’s “American Idol,” as the top five contestants went for broke, covering everyone from Lady Gaga to Montgomery Gentry with memorable results.

And all the vocal pyrotechnics kicked off with James Durbin’s rousing, arena-ready take on 30 Seconds to Mars’ “Closer to the Edge,” which earned him high praise from judge Steven Tyler (a guy who knows a thing or two about filling arenas), who told him, point blank, “I think you kicked that song’s ass.”

Of course, while Durbin was powering through their song, 30 Seconds to Mars were somewhere between Montreal and Toronto on their never-ending Closer to the Edge Tour. And it turns out they had no idea the presumed “Idol” front-runner had decided to cover their song. Though, as frontman Jared Leto told MTV News hours after Durbin’s performance, they’re thrilled that he did. Because even if they’ve never actually seen “American Idol” themselves, they know about the amount of people who have.

“Wow, we didn’t know that this was going to happen — we are probably the last few people on the planet who have never seen the show — but we are excited to have been able to share our song with so many people,” Leto wrote in an e-mail. ” ‘Closer’ has become more successful than we could have ever dreamed! [We’re] very grateful.”

Will Durbin’s version of “Closer” — and his emotional take on the Harry Nilsson hit “Without You” — be enough to carry him on to the next round? We’ll find out Thursday night (May 5), when the “American Idol” voting results are revealed. Who knows? Maybe 30 Seconds to Mars will even tune in.

Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” every Thursday at noon on MTV.com for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty! In the meantime, get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page, where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Kanye behaves at the VMAs!

He infamously interrupted Taylor Swift?s acceptance speech during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, but during this year?s star-studded ceremony, Kanye West patiently waited his turn. The egocentric rapper took the stage with Katy Perry to accept the Best Collaboration award for their sci-fi video ?E.T.? and he allowed the songstress to take the microphone first.

“Now, this is a time when you want to interrupt me, Kanye,” Katy said in front of the audience, clearly taking a dig at her pal - but Yeezy let her finish! ?Thank you to God, Katy Perry for being so brave and letting me back on the record,? he later said. Kanye earlier wowed the crowd as he performed his single ?Otis? with his Watch the Throne collaborator, Jay-Z.

Another big winner of the night included Lady Gaga, who won Best Female Video and Best Video with a Message for her single ?Born This Way.? The eccentric singer spent the night in character, presenting herself as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone ? even hitting on a shocked Britney Spears, who won Best Pop Video for her dance hit ?Till The World Ends.?

'Our Idiot Brother': The Reviews Are In!

Paul Rudd, in the title role, walks away with much of the critics’ praise in this ensemble comedy.
By Terri Schwartz

Even with strong performances from the ensemble cast in “Our Idiot Brother,” the Sundance darling is being heralded as Paul Rudd’s movie. Reviews for the comedy, which opened on Friday (August 25), are heralding Rudd’s turn as one of the best of his career. And although the response has been generally positive, critics did take issue with some of the other idiotic parts of the movie.

Some found the script’s approach to the characters too formulaic: Rudd’s character might be an idiot, but he is actually a commendable guy when compared to his three jaded sisters, his hippie ex-girlfriend and his wine-drinking mother. Others thought the movie was a bit unconvincing despite its well-meaning message. Still, the jump from “My Idiot Brother” at Sundance to “Our Idiot Brother” in wide-release seems to imply a more inclusive element to the film that resounded with critics.

So will “Our Idiot Brother” charm you? Here’s what the critics had to say:

The Idiot Brother
“Though the ensemble cast is uniformly strong, this is Rudd’s film. His inherent likability and genial manner are ideal for the character. He plays laid-back especially well. (His aging surfer dude in ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ was a variation on Ned.) Watching Rudd bring dimension to what could have been a clownish caricature is the best reason to see this good-natured family comedy. ‘Our Idiot Brother’ is as irresistible and easy to love as a golden retriever.” — Claudia Puig, USA Today

The Characters
“Peeking out from a curtain of shaggy hair and a beard, Rudd invests Ned with every ounce of the effusive, natural warmth that has become his trademark. And like so many movies in his career, he makes Our Idiot Brother much more tolerable than it deserves to be. Screenwriters Evgenia Peretz and David Schisgall play up Ned’s innocence by making his sisters thoroughly unappealing: Emily Mortimer plays a dowdy, sad-sack hausfrau married to a pompous documentarian (played with withering contempt by Steve Coogan); Elizabeth Banks flails in a misguided brunet pageboy as a ruthless Vanity Fair reporter; and Zooey Deschanel lends spaced-out self-absorption to a lesbian tempted by a similarly navel-gazing male artist.” — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

The Script
“You want to laugh at this, except the movie is forcing you to do so. Adultery and dysfunction are cute problems. Deschanel’s character shares a loft with her girlfriend (Rashida Jones, underutilized again and still the best thing here) and a gang of bohemians who don’t get up to anything interesting. Though Deschanel’s compulsion to play another Quirky Performance Artist is satisfied. Banks (shrill careerist) and Mortimer (neurotic wimp) conform to type, too. Ned makes their relationships harder than they already appear to be. He’s a gimmick, and yet without him the movie is just Hanna-Barbera and Her Sisters. Either way, it’s all emotionally counterfeit, and that bogusness infects the comedy.” — Wesley Morris, The Boston Globe

The Direction
“Efficiently directed by Jesse Peretz, (Ms. Peretz’s brother, evidently quite capable), Our Idiot Brother is a thin, unconvincing movie made likable by the charm and skill of its cast and by a script (by Ms. Peretz and her husband, David Schisgall) peppered with wit and insight. … A handful of scenes — a visit to a cultish self-help seminar, a family game of charades with Mom (Shirley Knight), a profile interview gone off the rails — are sharp, funny and surprising. But the filmmakers mostly look for humor in obvious, picked-over places. Can we please have a moratorium on private-school interviews? Like yoga classes (which this movie blessedly leaves alone), they are hard in real life and suspiciously easy in movies.” — A.O. Scott, The New York Times

The Final Word
” My Idiot Brother might have made Ned more of a symbol and less of a person. Where the filmmakers, and Mr. Rudd, go right is making him such a round and sympathetic figure, rather than the desperate, pathetic and/or slapstick character he might have been in different hands. Our Idiot Brother — not My or Your or Their idiot brother — is goofily funny, and silly, and in many ways follows the currents of contemporary comedy into the gulf stream of inanity. And yet Ned turns out to be a strangely moving figure, a comic foil worthy of affection, perhaps even respect.” — John Anderson, The Wall Street Journal

'Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark' Is Guillermo Del Toro's 'Hide And Seek'

‘That’s the rhythm of the movie in a horror genre,’ producer tells MTV News.
By Deborah Kim, with reporting by Kara Warner

It’s a cautionary tale straight out of a mother’s mouth: “If you don’t brush your teeth, monsters will creep into your mouth at night and devour them like candy.” But Guillermo del Toro’s rated-R version is less cavity, more cryptic.

Based on a 1973 TV movie with the same name, Friday’s “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” starring Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce, features the same hollow whispers from menacing monsters trapped behind brick fireplaces, only now those creatures are out for innocent, bright-white baby teeth.

But even with del Toro’s new spin on what he said was the scariest movie he’d ever seen as a kid, the producer told MTV News some things always stay the same.

“In horror films, there are only two dynamics. One is what I call hide and seek, meaning there’s a lot of tension. If you’re searching, you’re really tense about opening the door and somebody jumping out of the closet that was hiding.

“And if you’re hiding in the closet, you’re really afraid when you hear footsteps nearby,” he added. “And then tag, when the person finally comes out, and you’re going to chase them to tag them.”

With a mind as complicated and fantastical as Pan’s Labyrinth, you’d expect del Toro to have a more intricate stream of thought. But the method behind his moviemaking is simply, well, simple.

“I do sort of a tag, hide and seek, hide and seek, hide and seek, tag, tag, tag,” he explained. “So that’s the rhythm of the movie in a horror genre. You just pace it like that.”

T.I. Gets Sprung from the Joint

He got thrown in the slammer on a weapons violations charge back in October 2010, and now T.I. is a free man.

The ?Whatever You Like? rapper completed his 11-month sentence and was released this morning (August 31) according to his attorney.

Upon his release, T.I. tweeted, “The storm is over and da sun back out. It’s our time to shine, shanty! Welcome to the beginning of our happy ending.”

T.I. also served seven months in an Arkansas prison back in 2009 for trying to buy unregistered guns and silencers from undercover federal agents.

Lil Wayne Proud Of Drake, Nicki Minaj VMA Moments

‘It’s like you being a senior and you’re watching the freshmen come in,’ Wayne tells MTV News before Sunday’s show.

This time last year Lil Wayne was behind bars as VMA weekend festivities were kicking off — not that his incarceration dampened his spirits. The Young Money CEO had Nicki Minaj and Drake to root for.

“I think it meant a whole lot more for me to see them onstage than it means for me to even be onstage this year, because I know they want this so bad and this is what they do it for,” Wayne said of his artists’ 2010 VMA moments versus his own involvement this year.

Last year, Nicki performed “Check It Out”with will.i.am during the VMA Pre-Show, wearing in a cotton candy-colored wig and form-fitting purple catsuit. Her YM cohort Drake had a hell of a night himself as he partnered with Swizz Beatz and Mary J. Blige to give a Frank Sinatra-inspired big show performance of his Thank Me Later single “Fancy.”

Wayne’s musical director Gil Smith promises a ‘rock star’ performance.

This year, while the Harajuku Barbie and Drizzy are scheduled to attend, it’s Wayne who’s planning a major moment. Not only is his “6 Foot 7 Foot” up for Best Hip-Hop Video, but Weezy will perform and then release the digital version of his long-awaited Tha Carter IV LP when the clock strikes midnight.

Still, for Tunechi, watching his Young Money team participate is rewarding enough. “They’re young, they’re fresh, and it’s beautiful to them,” Weezy said. “It’s like you being a senior and you’re watching the freshmen come in and enjoy the light. You remember, man, I remember being a freshman — that was amazing … to see them do that, I felt relieved like, ‘This is what it is all about, this is what it’s for.’ ”

What are you hoping Wayne performs at the 2011 VMAs? Tell us in the comments!

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year’s highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Tim Berners-Lee voted most inspirational person in their 50s

Father of the world wide web pips Hugh Grant, Kim Cattrall, Nick Cave, and Grayson Perry in survey by the high50.com club

The young, it seems, need do little more than flick a Bieberesque fringe or pout vampirically to attract the undying devotion of their peers.

But if you’re 50-something and out to impress your contemporaries, you’ll need to set your sights rather higher. To win their approval, you may find yourself compelled to revolutionise the flow of information across the planet, put sex firmly and loudly at the heart of the city, take on Rupert Murdoch, become one of your generation’s most respected songwriters, or embrace ceramics and cross-dressing. That, at any rate, is what the latest August survey would have us believe.

Members of the high50.com club ? “an online community with cutting edge editorial for people who believe life really begins at 50” ? have pronounced Tim Berners-Lee, father of the world wide web, the most inspirational person in their 50s. Close behind are Hugh Grant, Kim Cattrall, Nick Cave and Grayson Perry. Also in the top 10 are the designer and film-maker Tom Ford, the actors Colin Firth and Tilda Swinton, the journalist Tina Brown and the designer Cath Kidston.

A longlist of the 50 most inspirational people in their 50s was compiled by a panel of journalists and then handed to the website’s readers for a vote. After 1,363 responses had been received, the top 10 was announced. Falling just short were Hugh Laurie, Ricky Gervais, Nigella Lawson, Annie Lennox, Imran Khan and Jeanette Winterson.

Tim Willis, the editor of high50.com, said getting on the longlist was far from easy. “Being 50 isn’t about resting on your laurels, in our eyes. It’s about moving forward, trying something new, adding to your talents and knowledge base.”

Kathie Lee and Hoda Talk About the New 'Dancing With the Stars' Cast (VIDEO)

Kathie Lee Gifford
and Hoda Kotb followed the buzz about the new cast of ‘Dancing With the Stars’ by giving their own rundown on ‘Today’ (weekdays, 7AM on NBC). They went through each contestant one-by-on, showing their photos and giving commentary on each selection.

Carson Kressley, said Gifford, would provide the laughs for the show. Of former George Clooney girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis, Gifford said, “She’s gotta do something now, she’s not going out with George Clooney anymore.” She also said she had known about Nancy Grace’s casting in advance, but had to keep it secret.

Justin Bieber Joins Taylor Swift Onstage In L.A.

Teen heartthrob surprised concertgoers when he joined Swift for a duet on ‘Baby’ Tuesday night.

Justin Bieber is all about surprises this summer. Back in July, the 17-year-old pop superstar took fans by surprise when he joined Selena Gomez onstage in Costa Mesa, California, and on Tuesday night, he made another unexpected appearance when he joined Taylor Swift onstage for a duet of his hit “Baby” at her Speak Now tour stop in Los Angeles.

Video footage of the duo’s performance at the Staples Center hit the Internet shortly after the concert. It shows the music superstars sharing song verses and Bieber spitting a brief rap midway through the number.

Swift took to Twitter hours later to applaud her roaring concert audience and their overwhelming reaction to the Bieb’s surprise appearance. “Dear amazing LA crowd tonight, God only knows what I’d be without you,” she wrote. “You think you’ve heard LOUD screaming in your life. Then @justinbieber comes out and does a surprise song during your show. Woah. Unreal.”

Bieber responded to the country-pop darling, tweeting, “@taylorswift13 we should do that more often. :) great show! #muchlove.”

It was nothing but love as Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, also chimed in on the surprise concert cameo. “Had to keep it a secret all day. But @justinbieber just came out and sang BABY with @taylorswift13 at STAPLES. EPIC ROAR! #greatmoment,” he wrote on Twitter.

Bieber also recently collaborated with Chris Brown. Earlier this month, the Video Music Award nominee showed off his rap skills on “Ladies Love Me,” a track that appears on Breezy’s Boy in Detention mixtape.

Spoilers! Will We See Katherine in Season 3?

When Vampire Diaries’ executive producer Kevin Williamson spoke with The Insider recently, he gushed tons of juicy spoilers about Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) Ripper road trip with Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and which of the Originals we can expect to see in Season 3.But sadly, Williamson wouldn’t say whether or not Her Sassiness Katherine (Nina Dobrev) will play a role in Season 3. “If Katherine appears, and how she appears, remains to be seen,” he says.
