Atlanta rapper confirms on MTV News’ ‘RapFix Live’ that he signed a $10 million deal with Fif’s G-Unit.

Shawty Lo is already a boss in his own right, thanks to his D4L Records, but now he has partnered with 50 Cent’s G-Unit brand and label. The Atlanta trap star visited MTV News’ “RapFix Live” on Wednesday and revealed more details about his and 50’s venture, which is worth a reported $10 million.

“Basically, 50 is like my major behind me,” Shawty said. “I still kept my label, D4L, I just joined forces with G-Unit, so it’s D4L/G-Unit. 50 got more outlets to take me to more places. I could’ve signed with a lot of labels, but I feel like 50 is a marketing genius and we have similar lifestyles coming up, and I feel like he knows what it’s going to take to get me where I need to be.”

Shawty Lo was in discussions with other labels, but “RapFix” host Sway Calloway asked the “Dey Know” rapper what the conversation was like when he sat down with 50 Cent to discuss their future business plans.

“It was fun. We ate, we kicked it,” Shawty said. “The meeting, it was a seven-hour meeting. I had seven meetings on the table, but when me and 50 sat down, it was like a seven-hour meeting. It was very crazy, man. We had one break, and it was just thought of the minds, man. That’s where I took my talents to, G-Unit.”

A big reason Shawty Lo decided to partner with G-Unit was his disdain for 360 deals. In these deals, instead of just profits from record sales, labels also claim a percentage of an artist’s proceeds from merchandise and touring.

“That was my main reason to go do the deal with 50 is because I hate the 360 situation,” Lo said. “I signed a 50/50 deal with 50. It was for a very large amount of money. But the money, it ain’t for me to flex and spend it; it’s for me to run a label down in the South. Instead of the artists having to fly all the way up to New York or fly to the West Coast to get a deal, I’m based in the South, so they can come and see me.”

It was reported that the D4L/G-Unit deal was worth even more than what a “large amount” suggests, which Shawty Lo confirmed: “Yes, it’s a $10 million deal.”

While Nicki Minaj has remained quiet on Twitter since her cousin’s death, her Femme Fatale tourmate Britney Spears sent love and support her way on the social networking site.

“Please keep @NickiMinaj & her family in your prayers. … keep up the amazing love and support you guys have for her,” Spears tweeted late Tuesday. Minaj was performing at a show on Monday night in Winnipeg when it was learned that her cousin had been shot and killed in New York. The tour was off Tuesday night and will resume Wednesday in Minnesota.

Minaj initially tweeted the news of the murder of her cousin, Nicholas Telemaque, on Monday evening. He was shot in Brooklyn near his home in the early hours of Independence Day, according to police. Police say that the 27-year-old was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso region. He was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The investigation is ongoing.

A relative of Telemaque spoke to Radar Online shortly after the news broke, noting that Minaj is “devastated” over the loss. “He was shot in the chest as he walked towards his car close to his home. Nicki is absolutely devastated, as are all our family — she was very close to her cousin, but now he has gone,” Carol Clarke told the website, adding that she believed he was killed as a result of “mistaken identity.”

“She has reached out to Nicholas’ mom, Victoria, to offer her words of comfort but she is too distraught. Nicholas was a quiet person but he could be the life and soul of the party, too,” Clarke added. “He did not run with gangs or anything like that.”

Telemaque had reportedly been seen at C-PAC nightclub earlier that night. “His friends have told us there wasn’t any trouble that night and we believe it could have been a case of mistaken identity, but the police are still investigating the case,” she said. “We are still trying to make arrangements for his funeral, but I will really miss him because he was a good person.”

While will.i.am used to cut a rug, these days, when he and the rest of the Black Eyed Peas hit the stage, will’s dancing skills are noticeably absent from the show, which usually includes a slew of other eye-catching props like over-the-top costumes and lasers.

“I’m the only one dancing now,” apl.de.ap laughed to MTV News when we caught up with the group at Terminal 5 in New York, where they were taping a show set to air Friday at midnight ET on MTV.

But will.i.am has a good reason for his recent lack of dancing: competition with himself.

“I like to allow the old me to have the crown somewhere, because me versus the old me — I’m a better businessman now than when I was 22, I’m a better producer than I was when I was 23, so I got to let the old me beat me somewhere,” will.i.am said.

Fergie, meanwhile, had this explanation: “The pants got tighter.”

The MTV special might not show off too much of will’s dancing, but it will feature some of the group’s biggest hits. “Before we had ‘I Gotta Feeling,’ it was like, ‘We know we gotta play “Pump It” and “Let’s Get It Started,” ’ ” will.i.am explained. “We used to do ‘Let’s Get It Started’ at the end, because that was our big finale, which didn’t really make sense. And for a while, [we did] ‘My Humps’ and then it got to the point where we didn’t want to play ‘My Humps’ no more. You know, ‘cause ‘I met a girl down at the disco,’ I just didn’t want to say that no more, lyrically.

“It wasn’t like my best lyrically, but it was fun,” he continued. “It wasn’t lyrical miracles, but the beat was rocking, so we throw the beat in there and just let the beat linger, but now ‘I Gotta Feeling’ is like ‘What?’ and when we perform it, in my mind, I’m like, ‘Where did that song come from?’ I can’t believe this is us, and look at all these people singing it like it’s theirs.”

‘I wanted to take everybody back,’ Jeezy tells MTV news of staging album-anniversary concerts in NYC and ATL.

Young Jeezy sure knows how to throw a birthday bash. To celebrate the six-year anniversary of the release of his 2005 debut album, Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101, Jeezy staged a pair of concerts, one in New York City on Monday, and a second on Tuesday, which was actually the anniversary of the album, in Atlanta.

“It felt good to see the city out, givin’ everybody something to dress up for, get out have a good time,” the Snowman told MTV News on Tuesday while backstage at his ATL show. “It was definitely a lot of thug motivatin’ going on. Everybody was there for one reason: We were celebrating. It was a celebration.

“I just wanted to put somethin’ together that was special,” he said of the tribute shows. “Music is so different nowadays from when I came out. An album would last two or three years, especially when you have a classic like I do,” he added with a chuckle.

In NYC, Jeezy thrilled concertgoers as he ran through the TM 101 track list, bringing out special guests like Jay-Z, Kanye West, Bun B, Fabolous and the LOX during the 80-minute show. And for Atlanta, Jizzle brought out Yo Gotti and Lil Scrappy.

“I got a lot of what I call family in this industry. It’s a lot of cats that came from the same walk of life that I came from and we really rock like that,” Jeezy said about his star-studded guest list. “We just show that support for each other. I’ve been on tour with a lot of these cats and kick it on the phone with them daily, so it’s phone calls, two, three phone calls,” he said of getting his rap-star friends to participate.

When it was released in 2005, Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101 helped usher in a brand of drug-related, trap rap that has become prevalent in hip-hop in the past six years. Things have definitely changed since Jeezy made his first splash, but he believes his album represents a specific time in hip-hop that may never return.

” ‘05 was a beautiful year — for the economy, for the people, for the hood, just working-class, even if you were a street hustler,” Young Jeezy said of his rookie year in rap. “The world is a different place now, so I wanted to take everybody back and give them that feeling, because it’s hard out here. At the same time, just that in the back of your head, knowing when this music was playing what you were doing, help you get through your day again, still motivation.”

During his set in NY, Jeezy announced that his long awaited TM 103 will be released on September 20, and on Tuesday, he announced a 26-ctiy tour that will begin in New Orleans on July 31, concluding in Seattle on September 2.

Celebrities encourage intrusion, and we have a right to know about anything that affects politicians’ ability to do their jobs

The most extraordinary thing about the News International crisis is the way in which it has caused the British national media to lose its greatest weapon: scepticism.

If this was happening in any other sector, there would be have been a brief flurry of witch-hunting followed quickly by more measured analysis of the bigger picture, and calm would have descended.

But journalists appear to be incompetent when reporting on their own activities. A few commentators have sounded warning notes about the scale of the current hysteria but in general the press has rolled over.

Regarding the most shocking revelation of them all, that Milly Dowler’s voicemail was allegedly hacked into on behalf of the News of the World, there is a valid, albeit arguable, journalistic justification for it. If it is true, as alleged, that private detectives deleted some messages in order to allow new ones in, then any new message might have carried a clue as to the child’s whereabouts and indeed our increasingly beleaguered police might have thought of this for themselves. The NoW showed some initiative here ? it is only a pity they did so in such an insensitive and self-interested fashion, failing entirely to acknowledge the distress this could (and did) cause the Dowler family.

Looking into the affairs of celebrities is a tawdry business but, as has been said many times in the past under broadly similar circumstances, it is generally encouraged by those concerned. A huge number of long-lens “intrusions” are carefully stage-managed. I know this from direct experience. Indeed, the show-business end of the public relations industry is handsomely rewarded to increase the media coverage of celebrities and drum up interest in their private lives.

Ever since the Camillagate scandal (when Prince Charles’s mobile phone call to his lover, Camilla Parker-Bowles, was recorded and sold to the media) broke 19 years ago, it has been common knowledge that hacking unprotected mobile phones is easy. It has also been possible to block such hacking. Prince Charles hasn’t been hacked again. Nor have subsequent political leaders, as far as I can recall. That is because the technology is available to protect mobile phone users from intrusion. Surely, the failure of others to employ such protection was a factor which contributed to, and therefore mitigated, the intrusion?

Gordon Brown’s rather unpleasant attempt to clamber onto the anti-Murdoch bandwagon has rightly been denounced, but why has there been no fightback by the media, to justify and defend journalistic investigation of all Brown’s affairs, both public and private?

Is it not right that every aspect of a prime minister’s life should be examined in minute detail? Is it not right that the public should know if there are factors in his private life that might hamper his ability to govern? Brown can say all he likes about “criminal elements” digging into his privacy but is it not for the common good that his bank accounts and tax affairs have been scrutinised, to ensure that there is no impropriety?

The matter of his child’s illness required more sensitivity than the NoW was ever able to muster, but there is nonetheless a strong argument that it should have been in the public domain, as it affected Brown’s ability to govern. Who is to find out these sometimes awkward details and present them to the public, if not journalists?

The hacking affair is remarkable in that the celebrities and politicians who wish to benefit from media coverage, but also control it, are being allowed to do so. And it is doubly extraordinary that this is happening with scarcely a whimper from the media. It does not help, of course, that the “but everyone was doing it” argument will not work only a year after the media denounced all politicians who tried the same line in defence of their outlandish expenses claims. It also did not help that, until last weekend, there was typically little else to write about at this time of year. And it does not help that the police force senses its own mortality and is desperate to do something to win back credibility.

But this is more than just a silly season story. The rest of the media have the scent of blood in their snouts and show no signs of mercy. We have lost one of the oldest newspapers in the country, a part of British life for more than a century and a half. The most powerful media magnate in the world has been panicked into a bizarre and unedifying retreat, so irrational that he has committed the cardinal business sin of sacrificing the brand in favour of the people ? and then been forced to ditch the people anyway. And now the hunt is expanding beyond the boundaries of News International.

Instead of defending their wayward sibling, Britain’s journalists handed it to the wolves. It looked to an outsider like an act of cowardice and treachery. I know for certain that other newspapers in other media groups have, directly or indirectly, used the same investigative tactics. If or when that emerges, giving ammunition to the growing censorship lobby, journalists will bitterly regret their disloyalty.

Eminem might lend you the crown for a week, but this summer’s chart king is not ready to abdicate his throne just yet. A week after falling back to #2, Slim Shady’s Recovery will be back on top of the Billboard 200 albums charts next week thanks to sales of 133,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.

That means that not only did Em cross the 2.1 million mark in just eight weeks, but he pushes back last week’s #1, Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs, to #2, as the Canadian indie rockers saw a steep (66 percent) decline on sales of 52,000. Among the newcomers in the top 10 are the Camp Rock 2 soundtrack (#3, 41,000) and the latest from Zakk Wylde’s Black Label Society, Order of the Black (#4, 33,000); country singer Blake Shelton with All About Tonight (#6, 33,000); and college crooner Mike Posner, whose major label debut, 31 Minutes to Takeoff, lands at #8 on sales of 29,000.

The rest of the top 10: Justin Bieber, My World 2.0 (#5, 33,000); Rick Ross, Teflon Don (#7, 30,000); Kidz Bop 18 (#9, 27,000); and Avenged Sevenfold, Nightmare (#10, 27,000).

Though he fell out of the top 10 to #11, Drake’s Thank Me Later racked up another 24,000 in sales, pushing the rapper to the cusp of platinum status. Lady Gaga’s The Fame continues to move units (#13, 21,000) nearly two years after its release, but her The Remix album had a swift fall from the top 10, dropping from a #6 debut to #16 in week two as sales fell 58 percent to 17,000.

Houston legend Bun B’s Trill O.G. album suffered a similar fate, shedding 60 percent of sales in its second week to drop 13 spots to #17 (16,000). As the movie disappointed at the box office, the Beck-fueled soundtrack to “Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World” also had a soft landing, coming in at #24 (13,000).

With a four-pack of VMA nominations and a performance slot in hand, Florence and the Machine’s Lungs saw a huge bump on the charts, leaping from #105 to #61 on sales of 6,000.

Over on the iTunes charts, Em continued his stranglehold on the top, lording over the albums tally yet again, with Arcade Fire just behind (iTunes does not release sales data), followed by Posner, Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More, Camp Rock 2, Shelton, the “Pilgrim” soundtrack, the Step Up 3D soundtrack, Black Label Society, and Zac Brown Band’s You Get What You Give.

On the iTunes singles chart, Em and Rihanna also kept their spot at #1 with “Love the Way You Lie,” followed by the usual suspects: Taio Cruz (“Dynamite”), Katy Perry (“Teenage Dream”), Enrique Iglesias (“I Like It”), Taylor Swift (“Mine”), Usher (“DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love”), B.o.B (“Magic”), Posner (“Cooler Than Me”), Perry again (“California Gurls”) and Jason DeRulo (“Ridin’ Solo”).

Eminem seems safe for another week, as the only major competition in the cycle is from Iron Maiden, John Mellencamp, David Gray, and Ray LaMontagne, with a possible dark horse #1 in country singer Trace Adkins.
