Taylor Swift Recalls Shooting 'Story Of Us' Video During Tornadoes

‘We had to hide in a room where there were no windows,’ she tells MTV News of Nashville shoot.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway

The video for “Story of Us” follows Taylor Swift’s collegiate character as she falls in love in the stacks of her Ivy League library … and falls very much out of love in the hallowed hallways of that same school.

Shot at Vanderbilt University near her home in Nashville, the video was complicated not by the tumultuous relationship, but instead by some very dangerous weather conditions.

“There were a few complications. This was actually when a bunch of tornadoes were hitting Nashville,” she recalled in Tuesday’s (May 24) chat with Sway during “We had to hide. All of us, we had to hide in a room where there were no windows, so that was a little bit crazy. [But] other than that, it was incredibly fun.”

The video not only features one very good-looking guy, but also Swift’s whole band in varying roles. Who got the best role? Her backup singer Liz Huett, who got to make out with Swift’s love interest in the clip. And the story of Taylor and Liz is almost more interesting than the story of Swift and the boy who inspired the song and video.

“We met in a meet-and-greet line. I started out playing small bars and clubs a few years ago, and she came to one of the shows, and I would sign autographs … and she waited three or four hours,” Swift recalled. “And she came up and asked if she could sing for me. … She sang for me, and [I said], ‘You’ve got to audition for some TV talent show.’ And I ran into her a few months later, and one thing led to another and she ended up being my backup singer on tour and making out with a guy in my video.”

Don Lemon on Being Gay, Black & Twitter Feed Crush Fodder

In the two-plus weeks since Don Lemon announced he is gay in tandem with the release of his new memoir, ‘Transparent,’ the CNN anchor has received both kudos and criticism.

The praise is geared toward the courage it took to openly embrace his homosexuality as a public figure. The criticism lies mainly with the language Lemon used in his announcement. Lemon told the ‘New York Times’, where the news of his announcement first broke: “It’s quite different for an African-American male…It’s about the worst thing you can be in black culture. You’re taught you have to be a man; you have to be masculine. In the black community they think you can pray the gay away.” Lemon also mentioned black women specifically, expressing his concern “that black women will say the same things [about me being gay] as they do about how black men should be dating black women.”

We spoke to Lemon recently about those comments and his perspective on homosexuality in the black community, how life has changed since becoming an openly gay public figure and the women who still have a crush on him.

Jozen Cummings: How long did you know you were gay before you came out so publicly?
DL: I say in the book, I’ve always known I was gay. I think the exact quote in the book is, “Since I was knee high to a duck I’ve always known I was gay.” I had crushes on boys - it wasn’t in a sexual way, because kids aren’t that way, they don’t really know, they just know they have a crush on someone. I don’t remember the first person I came out to, but I didn’t come out to my mom until I was 30 years old.

JC: Did you ever get a sense others knew before you said anything?
DL: I didn’t assume people knew or didn’t know, but it’s not something I ran around talking about. My colleagues at work who were closest to me or who I happened to have some sort of personal relationship with outside of work - they knew and we discussed it.

JC: How has life changed for you since you came out?
DL: Well, personally, it’s been overwhelming. For a second there, it was like, ‘Whoa, what’s going on with my life?’ Professionally, I’m not quite sure because it’s only been a week and two days. You’ll have to ask me in a year or three years or five years or 10 years, what actually happens. In some odd way [it has] turned out the exact opposite of what I thought. I thought I was doing something people ultimately would think I shouldn’t be doing.

JC: In what ways did you think this was going to be a detriment?
DL: Anyone who has been in my position and who’s gay and who’s thought of coming out and either done it or not done it, has actually thought it was going to be detrimental to their career. That’s why they haven’t done it. Think about how many people you have out in broadcasting, in professional sports, in acting - people are worried about it. It’s how our culture has been sort of groomed. And I have to say this, because I’m talking to you, aren’t you a black journalist?

JC: Yes.
DL: So quite honestly, Jozen, there are people who are mad at me and say, “Oh you’re throwing black people under the bus.” No I’m not, I’m black, I live in the world as a black man, and I know how our culture thinks about homosexuality. You think about those things too as a black man, like, what are black people going to say about me, am I going to have the support from my base, which is black people, and if they turn their backs on me or they get upset with me, then what the heck am I going to do?

JC: Isn’t it fair to say it’s not just black people who have issues with homosexuality? When you came out, a lot of people read your remarks about the negative reactions anticipated from black women as somewhat of an attack.

DL:
Black women are saying the same thing about me as they are saying about black men dating white women, I stand by that. All you have to do is read the blogs or go listen to the radio shows I’ve been on. When I’ve been on black radio shows [the subject of black women] inevitably comes up every single time. When I sit on white radio shows or have been interviewed by journalists who are not of color, it never comes up. So I know it’s something that we need to talk about. I am a black person! Let’s not forget that, and I know what it’s like to be a black person, I know what our issues are. I’m not throwing anyone under the bus. I know white people have issues with homosexuality as well, but when you’re looking at people who are out in the community and making a difference when it comes to gay issues, it’s usually white people and white men - wealthy white men - who are on the forefront of that.

JC: But others have been supportive, have they not?
DL: I’ve been overwhelmingly surprised by the positive support in the African American community. People have come through and been amazing. I am grateful for that.

JC: Black women?
DL: You know what’s funny? Women are like, “I don’t care if you’re gay, I still want to marry you. I can still fantasize, because I wasn’t in a relationship with you before, so I’m going to keep my fantasy going.” You should read my feed on Twitter or Facebook. I think women get it. People appreciate honesty and that’s what I’m walking in.

Rachel Prayed to Be Skinny on 'Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition' Premiere (VIDEO)

It’s been a while, but the ‘Extreme Makeover’ franchise has a second spin-off. The first one, ‘Home Edition’ has obviously far surpassed its disastrous plastic surgery parent, and this latest iteration looks to inspire personal change through natural means rather than cosmetic.

‘Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition’ (Mon., 10PM ET on ABC) premiered with the year-long story of one person struggling with weight, and will continue spotlighting a single person for each of its eight episodes.

Taking more from ‘Heavy’ than competition shows like ‘The Biggest Loser,’ the only prize on ‘EM: WLE’ is regaining a sense of self-worth and confidence, and possibly the chance to live a fuller, happier and longer life.

Katy Perry Tweets About Russell Brand's Deportation From Japan

Brand was forced to leave the country on Saturday because of unspecified prior offenses.
By Gil Kaufman

Russell Brand’s past just keeps catching up with him. No, we’re not talking about his critically panned remake of “Arthur,” but rather his bad-boy days before he cleaned up his act, rebooted his career and married pop queen Katy Perry.

According to tweets from Perry, Brand was held in custody by Japanese authorities on Saturday before later being deported from the country as a result of unspecified offenses from a decade ago.

Brand had flown to Japan to watch Perry perform a show, and the singer provided updates to fans about her hubby’s legal problems. “So … my husband just got deported from Japan,” Perry tweeted on Saturday afternoon. “I am so. sad. I brought him all this way to show him my favorite place #tokyodreamscrushed.”

About an hour later she updated the situation and said that Brand was sent packing for “priors from over 10 years ago!” She did not specify what those prior offenses were. Brand, a self-professed former sex and drug addict, has a long history of arrests in England, as well as a 2010 arrest for attacking a paparazzo at Los Angeles International Airport.

Despite the international incident, Perry told her fans she had no ill will toward Japanese authorities. “But of COURSE I ♥ my Japanese fans & the show #MUSTGOON no matter the daily aftershocks or husband kidnappings! #it’snotrightbutit’soka.”

Brand also kept his chin up and brushed off the incident in his usual self-deprecating manner. “Planning escape from Japanese custody. It’s bloody hard to dig a tunnel with a chopstick,” he tweeted after his deportation on Sunday, noting soon after that “Stockholm Syndrome kicking in. Just asked my guard out for (vegetarian) sushi. He giggled.”

Once the ordeal was over, Brand added, “Alcatraz! Shawshank Redemption! And now this! Ah, sweet blue bird of freedom!” According to reports, Tokyo immigration officials declined to comment on the incident, citing privacy issues.

Mindless Behavior Break Down Ode To Texting, 'My Girl'

‘We text, our parents text, the song could relate to everyone,’ 13-year-old Ray Ray tells MTV News about boy band’s catchy debut single.

Mindless Behavior have been burning up teen girls’ iPods with their catchy debut single, “My Girl,” a track about a girl who texts her boyfriend constantly. It’s a topic the up-and-coming boy band — Ray Ray, Princeton, Prodigy and Roc Royal — told MTV News they could relate to.

“Well, ‘My Girl’ is about, we’re talking to each other, talking to our friends or whoever you hang out with, that our girls text us a lot,” Ray Ray explained. “And everyone texts. We text, our parents text, the song could relate to everyone.”

Ray Ray’s bandmate Princeton added that the song not only appealed to them lyrically, but its funky, techno/R&B beat also won them over. “First, when we heard the beat it was just catchy and then our management team made the lyrics,” he said. “So it went perfectly.”

The four 13-year-olds are also stoked about the video for “My Girl,” which serves not only as an intro to the new pop group, but also an eye-catching spectacle of smooth dance moves. “It was exciting. We were all happy. We had a lot of fun on the set,” Ray Ray said.

Princeton noted that although the daylong shoot could have been grueling, it was in fact a good time.

“It was an all-day shoot. We started at 5 o’clock in the morning and ended at 10 o’clock at night, so it was fun. We saw the different outfits and the crew was amazing too,” he recalled. “[The video] starts off with us walking out of a concert and girls are screaming. It’s basically just us at a concert performing in different outfits and different scenes.”

What do you think of Mindless Behavior’s “My Girl” video? Tell us in the comments!
